Wapee P'tu (Dhu) Murphy

HAMPTON - Wapee P'tu (Dhu) Murphy, 62, passed away April 12, 2006, in Hampton surrounded by her family. Dhu was born April 10, 1944, in Phandon, Kumphawapee, Thailand. After many travels to the Philippines, Japan and Baltimore, she came to the United States in 1974, settling in Hampton in 1981. Although Dhu's formal education ended in sixth grade, as a single parent of two, she attended and graduated from culinary arts school and the Adams Cosmetology Academy. She also learned the trade of being a seamstress. In Thailand, Dhu met Paul J. Murphy Jr. (retired Air Force MSgt). They were married on March 25, 1974, and within three years, had two more children. Being a military wife, she was ready for anything. She sacrificed her career by being home with her children, which she felt was more important. During her time at home, she provided in-home childcare as well as catering and food preparation. Her home was always open to those in search of support. She took in many young people and allowed them to stay as long as they needed. Dhu was an expert in the art of ancient Thai traditional carving of fruits and vegetables. She loved to entertain and cook Thai cuisine and was the best in town. Dhu was a devoted member of the Wat Pasantidhamma Buddhist Temple in Carrollton, Va. Along with the daily chores of food preparations and offerings to the monks, Dhu performed yard work such as maintaining meditation spots on the seven-acre property. It was there that she served, lead, taught and introduced many to the practices of Buddhism. Survivors include her husband, Paul J. Murphy Jr.; her cousin, Arjarn Nao of Carrollton (Thailand); four children: her daughter, Jett M. Wilson and her husband, Parish, of Hampton, her son, Tep Murphy of Hampton, her daughter, Kat M. Edmondson and her husband, Paul, of Hampton, and her son, Seamus P. Murphy and his wife, Christina, of Hampton. She is also survived by her seven grandchildren, Xavier D. Wilson, Alysia D. Wilson, Kaylan D. Murphy, Madeline M. Edmondson, Scout M. Edmondson, Shane R. Murphy and Shyan C. Murphy, all of Hampton. The family would like to express their gratitude to the leadership and members of the Wat Pasantidhamma Buddhist Temple for their support and prayers during this time. The comfort and visitations from family and friends from near and far is also greatly appreciated. A traditional Buddhist service will be held Thursday, April 13, and Friday, April 14, from 6pm-7pm. This will include two nights of religious ceremony, followed by a final morning service, which will be held at 10:00am on Saturday, April 15. All services will take place at the Wat Pasantidhamma Buddhist Temple in Carrollton, Virginia. The family requests any expressions of sympathy to take the form of contributions to the Wat Pasantidhamma (Satipatthana Peace Center), 14289 Chapman's Lane, Carrollton, VA 23314, or to the American Cancer Society, 11835 Canon Blvd., Suite A-102, Newport News, VA 23606.
