To Her Eternal Home
The funeral of Mrs. Peter Brixius, who passed to her heavenly home early last Friday morning, was held at the Congregational church on Sunday afternoon and was attended by a large concourse of sorrowing friends, the services being conducted by Rev. Fr. Gensichen, and interment was made in the Leigh cemetery.
For nearly seven years Mrs. Brixius had suffered intensely from rheumatism and to the pains of that malady have been added, of late, the sufferings accompanying dropsy. Everything known to medical science has been brought to bear to afford her relief, but without avail, death only could relieve her of her ailment. The amazing fortitude and gentle patience which Mrs. Brixius has shown throughout her long illness are indices to the splendid character of the women. Devoted to her children and her husband, she looked upon their lives with faith and confidence and leaned much upon them for strength.
Mary Dorthea Reiss, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Reiss, was born December 15, 1855, at Aurora, Illinois, and resided there with her parents during childhood. At the age of twenty-one years she was united in marriage to Peter Brixius, Oct. 9, 1876, at Elgin, Illinois. After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Brixius came to Nebraska, and have lived most of the time since on their farm in Stanton County, seven and a half miles northwest of Leigh.
To this union eleven children were born, nine of whom, with the husband and father, survive. Two children, Elizabeth and John, died in their youth. The children are: Charles Brixius, of Battle Creek, Nebr., Mrs. Rose Stuart, of Elgin, Illinois, Mrs. Gus (Barbara) Schmitt, of Creston, Nebr., and Henry, Nicholas, Casper, George, William, and Harry, who are still at home. Five sisters and two brothers are also left to mourn this death, Mrs. Rose Lehmann, of Elgin, Illinois, Mrs. Elizabeth Daley, Shepherdville, Mich., Mrs. Anna Groteluschen, Leigh, Nebr., Mrs. Lulu Karthaus and Mrs. Josephine Edwards, of Humphrey, John Reiss, Keystone, Oklahoma, and George Reiss, Tilden, Nebr,. There are seven grandchildren.
