Maria's last name is listed in the church burial records as Eple, but research indicates she was Maria Anna Hurm Epple. She was the sister of Kaspar Hurm and wife of Stephan Epple, both buried in Saint Boniface. She died in January 1853 shortly after arrival in the United States.

Saint Boniface Church records indicate that Maria died in Troy, Indiana and was buried at Saint Pius Cemetery in Troy, Indiana by P.H. Peters. However, the listing page for Saint Pius states the cemetery was established in 1855, two years after Maria's death.
