Randolph Carter Berkeley
Birth: Jan. 9, 1875
Death: Feb. 4, 1960

Mexican Campaign Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. Served as a Major in the United States Marine Corps during the 1914 Vera Cruz, Mexico Campaign. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery on April 21 and 22, 1914. His citation reads “For distinguished conduct in battle, engagements of Vera Cruz. Maj. Berkeley was eminent and conspicuous in command of his battalion; was in the fighting of both days, and exhibited courage and skill in leading his men through action. His cool judgment and courage, and his skill in handling his men in encountering and overcoming the machinegun and rifle fire down Cinco de Mayo and parallel streets account for the small percentage of the losses of marines under his command”. His Medal was issued on December 4, 1915. Major Berkeley was also awarded the Navy Cross and the Distinguished Service Medal during his Marine Corps service. He entered the Marine Corps during the Spanish-American War in 1899, and remained in the service for 40 years, seeing duty in Panama, Cuba, the Philippines, China, Guam and in the Marine operations in Nicaragua in 1927. He would be promoted up to Major General, US Marine Corps before his retirement in 1939. (bio by: Russ Dodge)
