Berit (Bertha) Johnson was born in Tennes, Norway to Ane Marie Hemmingsdatter and Peter Larsen. She was one of ten children.
In 1870, she was united in marriage in Norway to Christopher Johnson. The couple came to Minnesota soon after their arrival in this country in 1872 and were among the earliest settlers of East Lake Lillian Township. The couple celebrated 55 years of marriage together.
Eight children were born to this union, four of whom preceded her in death, Emma Johnson Bomstad, Annie Pauline Johnson Summerlet and Emelie Johnson. Those who are left to mourn the death of a kind and devoted Mother are as follows Mrs. Rueben (Eda) Rasmusson, Jerry and Christian, all residents of the same township and living on neighboring farms, and Naldo who lives at the home place. There are 13 grandchildren and three great grandchildren as well as many other relatives who survive.
The funeral was held at the Norwegian Baptist home with service assisted by the General missinary of the Norwegian Conference of America. The grandchildren acted as pall bearers, Clarence Bomsta, Gerald Bomsta, Ramour Rasmusson, Norville Rasmusson, Emil Johnson and Elroy Summerlet.
