DEATH GENTLY TAKES WOMAN IN 102D YEAR

After passing more than a century on this earth, Mrs. Martha Ann Bonham drifted gently into the hereafter at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Nellie Bonham Smith in Bogue district of Sutter County sometime Monday night.

Mrs. Bonham celebrated her 102d birthday anniversary on December 4 last. She was a native of Randolph county, Illinois being born there in 1833. Married in 1850, at the age of 17, she lived awhile at Lancaster, Wisconsin, leaving there with her husband Hiram Bonham and their five small children in May 1863 en route to California. She was then 29 years of age.

The train of 60 wagons traversed the great American desert through Utah, and broke up on entering this state, the Bonhams settling in the San Joaquin. Later they moved to Tehama county, and still later to Colusa. For about ten years, since the death of her husband in Colusa, Mrs. Bonham had been living with her daughter in Sutter county.

She was the mother of 11 children, three dying in infancy and four sons dying later in life. Four daughters, 27 grandchildren, 46 great grandchildren, and 13 great great grandchildren were alive on her 100th birthday anniversary in 1933 when family and friends gathered at a great party in Pythian hall in Yuba City, more than 200 persons attending and showering her with gifts as she sat by her birthday cake on which 100 candles blazed.

The true felicity of life as Mrs. Bonham set it forth when she reached the century mark is to be free from perturbations, to understand ones duties to God and man, and to enjoy the present.

The daughters of Mrs Bonham now surviving are Mrs Smith of Bogue, Mrs. Emma Westfall of Corning, Mrs Mary Knauer of Lower Lake and Mrs Elizabeth Hurlburt of Colusa. A sister, Solace Campbell lives at Stockton and a brother Simpson Heard lives at Capitola.

Funeral arrangements are in charge of the McNary mortuary in Colusa where the body will be taken for burial. Services will be held at the McNary Chapel at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
