Sergeant John W. Franks,a member of the 7th South Carolina in Kershaw's brigade, was mortally wounded by artillery fire at Antietam. Before he died the next day, he extracted a promise from John Wilhite--his brother in law, who was with him--to take care of his wife, Jane, and their children back home at their plantation, Cedar Hill, in McCormack county, South Carolina. Before retreating with the rest of the army, Wilhite buried Sgt. Franks in an unmarked grave. When Jane Franks died shortly after the battle, Wilhite found the children a new home with an uncle in Georgia.
