Charles Lester Hanes was known as "Chub", lived his early life at Madison, KS and received his basic education there. On Sept 29, 1930, he was united in marriage to Gollie Marie Cassell at Howard, KS. They made their home at Madison for a short time before moving to McPherson to live and then in 1937, coming to Russell to make their home. Nearly all of his life, Chub was active in oil work and had worked at all phases of oil operations. For the past number of years, he had been an independent oil operator. He was checking a well with his son to see about some repairs when he was stricken with a heart attack.
He was a member of the Elks Lodge, Masonic Lodge, and Shrine and had been attending First Southern Baptist Church in Russell for some time. Preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Feldon Daryle who died in 1933; brother Lloyd and sister Fern Burris.
Survived by wife, Goldie; children Rayma Jean and Ray Lee all of Russell; brothers Carl, Raymond, Boyd, and Loy; sisters, Mary, Dorothy, and Joan.; 1 grandson and other relatives.
