Obituary from the Shreveport Times newspaper, June 16, 1945, Saturday, p. 1:

Funeral For Dr. Atkins At 5 P.M. Today Prominent Physician Dies After Becoming Ill at Club Meet

Funeral services for Dr. William Lamar Atkins, 52, Shreveport physician who died suddenly at noon Friday while attending a Shreveport Rotary Club luncheon, will be held at 5 p.m. today at the chapel of the Osborn Funeral Home.

Dr. Atkins was seated at a table at the Washington-Youree Hotel with Dr. C. R. Gowen and Dr. George Wolfe, when he suffered a heart attack. On the way to the Rotary luncheon with Dr. Gowen he had complained of feeling ill. After the luncheon had started he told his companions that he would have to leave.

He was accompanied outside to the mezzanine by Dr. Gowen and Dr. Wolfe and placed on a couch. Dr. Gowen went to telephone his wife and call an ambulance and when he returned Dr. Atkins was dead. Death was attributed to coronary occlusion, Dr. Gowen said.

Dr. Atkins was prominent in medical circles as an eye, ear, nose and throat specialist and had been a resident of Shreveport for many years, taking an active part in club and civic affairs.

He resided with his family at 628 Columbia Avenue and was born at Athens, Claiborne Parish. A veteran of World War I, he was an active member of Lowe-McFarlane post of the American Legion and the 40 and Eight.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Margaret Agurs Atkins; one daughter, Mrs. A. J. Hodges, Jr.; one son, W. L. Atkins, Jr.; one grandson, A. J. Hodges III; one brother, A. B. Atkins of Homer; three sisters, Mrs. A. L. Wallace, Mrs. C. B. Griffis of Rayville, and Mrs. James Rhodes of Alexandria; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Services will be conducted by Dr. Dana Dawson, pastor of the First Methodist Church, of which Dr. Atkins was a member. Burial will be in Forest Park Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be M. M. Atkins, Edward L. Crump, Ted R. Crump, A. J. Hodges, Glenn Flournoy, Howell Flournoy, Dr. George G. Garrett and Dr. J. G. Pou.
