Private First Class William Nathaniel Thompson was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Army Selective Service and a Draftee, PFC Thompson served our country until March 16th, 1966 in South Vietnam. He had served in the Dominican Republic before he went to Vietnam. He was 22 years old and was not married. It was reported that William died from small arms fire or grenade. His body was recovered. PFC Thompson is on panel 06E, line 016 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for one year.
MEDAL GOES TO PARENTS OF SOLDIER: MEBANE -- A Purple Heart Medal awarded posthumously to PFC William Nathaniel Thompson was presented to his parents yesterday in a ceremony at their home in the Hawfields Community. A delegation of Army Officers from Greensboro made the presentation to Mr and Mrs Russell Nathaniel Thompson, whose son was killed in action March 16 while serving with the US Forces in Vietnam. PFC Thompson, 22, was a paratrooper with the US Army. He was a native of Alamance County and had one son Willis and a number of relatives in the area. His brother Reverend Thompson said that William was a very good marksman. The family is still in contact with a soldier he saved that day. His only son(Willis)has twin sons,William & Willis. GGrandfather to a girl and a boy. Uncle to 10 boys and 6 girls. He was engaged at the time of his death to Ella Mae.
