Detroit Avenue was closed early Thursday between Alexis and Telegraph roads after a car and a pickup truck collided, killing three people and injuring two on Detroit just south of Alexis, authorities said.

Killed were three car passengers, two of whom were cousins.

Killed were cousins Bryan Richardson, 20, of Toledo and Bradley Richardson, Jr., 21, of Toledo, and another passenger, Noah McFadden, 23, of Sylvania.

They were pronounced dead at the scene.

Both drivers were injured. Paul Never, 68, of Ottawa Lake, Mich., the driver of the pickup truck, was taken to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center. Noel Papenfuse, 21, of Toledo, the driver of the car, also was taken to Mercy St. Vincent for treatment.

Mr. Never and Mr. Papenfuse both were listed in serious condition Thursday morning. Their family members declined to comment through a hospital spokesperson.

According to a Toledo Police traffic report, Mr. Papenfuse was driving a Pontiac Grand Prix southbound on North Detroit Avenue about 2 a.m. Thursday when Mr. Never was driving a Chevy Silverado pickup truck and pulled out of a parking lot at Club Chablis Inc., 5405 N. Detroit Ave., to turn northbound on North Detroit.

Mr. Never's pickup truck was struck by Mr. Papenfuse's vehicle.

Police believe speed appeared to be a factor for Mr. Papenfuse's vehicle.

Police also said alcohol may have been a factor for both drivers in the incident.

After the collision, the Papenfuse vehicle slid sideways and struck a curb, then a pole, before coming to a rest. Mr. Never's pickup rolled over and came to a rest.

The pickup spilled fluid onto the roadway in the crash. Detroit between Alexis and Telegraph roads was closed most of Thursday morning.

The accident is under investigation.
