Otha Cecil Bennett
My Great Grandfather

Otha was born in Boone County, Indiana, on 20 June 1869. He is the son of John and Sarah (Beach) Bennett. At the time of his birth John was 23 years old and his mother was 20 years old. As a child his family also lived in Iowa and Kansas. By 1883, when Otha was 13 years old, the family moved back to Boone County, Indiana. Otha moved to Bloomington, Indiana between 1885 and 1888. Once Otha moved to Bloomington, Indiana, he remained there for the rest of his life.

Otha was working on the construction of the "new" courthouse in Bloomington, and every day he would watch a pretty young lady sweep the wooden sidewalk in front of the little shop where she worked, which was across the street of the construction site. Finally he had the courage to cross the dirt road and ask the lady for a date. They were married on 12 August 1897 in Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana.

Otha and Ella had six children, five of which grew to adulthood. Baby Louisa died at nine months.

Otha Cecil Bennett passed away on Wednesday, 3 February 1960. He was 90 years old. He left behind 5 children, 8 grandchildren and 21 great-grand children.

Some of the remembrances of Otha are:

💙 He always had candy in his pocket for the children and grandchildren.
💙 He always shook his birthday cards and Christmas cards in the hopes money would fall out. (He did this for laughs and never really expected money.)
💙 He was soft-spoken, kind, and a man of his word.
💙 He always carried a coin purse in his front pocket.
💙 He loved his dog, Bob. He had the dog when his wife died.
💙 Ella, Otha's wife, canned their fruits, vegetables, jelly and jams until the late 1940's, then she would purchase these items at the market. One day Otha took one of his daughters over to the metal utility cabinet which acted as the pantry and said, "Come over here and look at this, she doesn't can anything."
💙 Otha was a good storyteller.
💙 When he worked on Highway 40 in the Ohio area he took his daughter, Ruth, with him to cook for his crew.
💙 He worked in many of the quarries in Bloomington.
💙 When he would go to the market to sell his eggs and cream he would always take his grandchildren for rides in his wagon.
💙 While working on the Bloomington Courthouse, he said the crew buried a bottle of whiskey under the cornerstone.
