From "The Morning Review", Decatur, Illinois, Sunday Feb. 18, 1883:
A Heart-Rending Calamity
A terribe tale of death reaches us from Sangamon county. On last Thursday afternoon Mr. John T. Ingels and family, consisting of a wife and two children the latter aged respectfully ten and two years, started from their home near Bates to visit relatives a few miles distant. The details of the affair are thus told by the State Register:
"They were in a two horse wagon, and had to cross Spring Creek, in the vicinity of the Morgan school house. After crossing the bridge, and while on the embankment, their wagon was capsized and they were all percipitated into the water which was rushing all over the entire bottom, and carried under an ice flow. Of what then occurred and of the unavailing struggles of the helpless family, we are not advised, and indeed we may never know. Some time afterwards Messrs. William Beerup and John Shumate, who went into a field in the vicinity to look after some shock corn, discovered the bodies lying around at different points in the water. Mrs Ingels and the two children were quite dead, and Mr. Ingels was so nearly gone that he did not recover consciousness for about five hours afterwards. Yesterday morning he was reported somewhat better, but at last accounts had not been informed of the terrible fate that overtook his wife and children."
