Frank Lynn Holder was a Dallas firefighter who was called on for advice, whether for battling a multiple-alarm blaze or planning construction of Dallas’ High Five interchange.

Holder, 61, died Wednesday at Baylor University Medical Center of acute myeloid leukemia.

Services for the retired fire lieutenant will be at 1 p.m. Monday in the Lake Pointe Church auditorium, 701 E. Interstate 30 in Rockwall.

Born and raised in Greenville, Holder had wanted to be a Dallas firefighter since high school, said his wife, Janice Holder of Rockwall.

In high school, Holder worked for a Dallas firefighter from Greenville who had a fence building business. Holder would spend the night at a fire station when there was a fence building job in Dallas.

“He just loved that lifestyle. ... He just thought it was the greatest job ever,” Janice Holder said. “That’s all he ever wanted to do.”

Holder attended East Texas State University (now Texas A&M-Commerce) and joined the Dallas department in 1974.

“It’s hard to tell you all the things he did,” said Mike Tunnell, a retired Dallas Fire Department captain.

Holder was a driver for several chiefs, a role that includes helping manage multiple-alarm fires. A chief’s driver coordinates what companies are already involved and the fire companies that could be summoned for support.

“Lynn always stayed real, real calm in those times,” Tunnell said.

Her husband helped implement the department’s incident command system for managing large fires, Janice Holder said.

Holder’s input also was sought for planning construction projects, including North Central Expressway and LBJ Freeway. Because his station backed up to North Central between Coit Road and Forest Lane, he helped project managers understand how construction might affect fire protection.

He also worked closely with top security personnel at Texas Instruments Inc.

“They worked hand-in-hand on preparation of any big event they might have,” Janice Holder said.

Holder didn’t want to retire until the planning of LBJ was complete, Tunnell said.

And, Holder was a department resource.

“If I had a question I always knew to call Lynn and he would know the answer almost always without looking up rules and regs,” Tunnell said. “If I couldn’t find it, I knew I could call on him.”

Holder retired in 2011.

In addition to his wife, Holder is survived by two sons, Jacob Holder of Hurst and Blake Holder of Rockwall; his mother, Doris Holder of Arlington; two brothers, Mike Holder of Coppell and Jon Holder of Arlington; and two grandchildren.
