Choise was a long-haired dachshund (mostly). She was black with white markings on her chest. As she aged, her face became a wizzened, wise-looking countenance; one man once said she looked like Yoda. She had a magnificent, plumed tailed that she held straight up. One ear flapped downward, apparently a birth defect. She had the most beautiful brown eyes. Choise showed up one day on the 4th of July at the corner of La Brea Street and Harbor Boulevard at a BBQ (she was then about 4 years old). She was shaking fearfully and clearly not happy with the firecrackers and other noisemakers being set off in the neighborhood. I took her in for the weekend until her collar tags could be checked after the holidays. She was pampered and hand-fed that weekend; I still missed my beloved labrador, Junior, that had died the year before. Long story longer, the little dog's owners were located and the dachshund was returned to their welcoming arms. Funny thing however. The little dog whose name was Choise (pronounced Schwazee), returned to my house everyday for the next month. She would be returned to her rightful owners, but that did not dissuade her. She'd come back. She'd be returned. It went on like that. Finally, the owner suggested that perhaps we keep her. It was odd having a dog run away from home and select another owner, but that's exactly what Choise did. She was a little dog with a big heart. A perfect companion. She even fit in with three cats who lived in the household; they all stood taller than her when they lined up in the kitchen at feeding time. Choise aged gracefully, looking wiser with every passing year. She lived to be 18 years old. Thanks Choise for running away from home and choosing us!
