PENDLETON — Thelma Jean Ainsworth, 84, a lifelong resident of Pendleton, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 2010, at a local care facility after a 20-year-long battle with cancer. Viewing will be held from 1-5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 4 and from 8-9 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5 at Burns Mortuary Chapel in Pendleton. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the chapel, with interment following at Olney Cemetery.
Mrs. Ainsworth was born Jan. 29, 1926, in Pendleton to Ray and Volma (Burke) VanOrsdall. She was raised in Pendleton, where her mother worked at the post office and her father worked for the state road department. She graduated from Pendleton High School and attended Blue Mountain Community College.
She married John Ainsworth in 1948 in Pendleton, where the couple made their home. She worked primarily as a homemaker while her husband ran the Terminal Café in Pendleton. She was widowed in 1962; she dedicated herself to raising her four children and completing her accounting degree. She was then employed at Comrie's Automotive and Oylear-Howard Motor Company, and as a bookkeeper for automotive businesses in Pendleton and Community Action Program of East Central Oregon (CAPECO). Following her retirement she lived at Oregon Trail Manor, McKay Creek Estates and Willowbrook Terrace.
Mrs. Ainsworth is survived by children John W. Ainsworth of Hermiston, Joseph Scott Ainsworth of Athena, Minnett V. Ainsworth Williams of Coos Bay, Paula R. Ainsworth Emerson of Pendleton and step-daughter Ardell Ainsworth of Dixie, Wash.; sister Janus Crum of Pendleton; nine grandchildren; and six nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband John Ainsworth and sister Lyrel Thompson.
