Samuel C. Arie was born on March 3, 1841 in Clinton County, Indiana, one of a number of children born to Joseph Arie and Nancy (Humphrey/Humphries/Humphreys) Arie. Joseph was born on June 12, 1794 in Greenbrier, Virginia (now West Virginia), while Nancy (Humphries) Arie was born on August 13, 1815 in a section of Virginia that also was to become part of West Virginia. Joseph Arie was a veteran of the War of 1812 having served as a Private in Capt. McLaughlin's Co. from Virginia.
Joseph Arie and Nancy Humprey/Humpreys were almost certainly married in the 1830's and are known to have had the following children;
1. William Arie, born in Greenbrier County, Virginia on December 2, 1833; William was married to Valerie R. Maxey c. 1857; Valerie R. Maxey was born on April 27, 1838 and died on December 15, 1876; William was then married 2nd to Mary C. Hockenberry on August 12, 1877 in Knox County, Illinois. In the 1860 census, William is found as head of household at Persifer Twp, Knox Co, IL; In the 1880 census, William is found as head of household at Galesburg, Knox Co, IL. William died on December 27, 1905 at Knox Co, IL at age 72. His mortal remains are believed to lie in the Westfall Cemetery in Victoria, Knox County, Illinois.
2. Anthony Arie, born c. June 14, 1836 in Ohio; Anthony was a member of Co. K of the 83rd Illinois during the Civil War; Anthony was married to Matilda Holland on August 10, 1866, but, they are believed to have been divorced in Galesburg, Illinois on October 21, 1876; Anthony is believed to have later been married to Anna "Maggie" ___________; At the time of the 1910, this is believed to be our Anthony Arie living in Sparta, Knox County, Illinois. His parents are both listed as having been born in Virginia;

The book "List of Ex-Soldiers, Sailors and Marines Living in Iowa, by Adjutant-General William L. Alexander, printed in, 1886" has Samuel C. Arie living in What Cheer, Keokuk County, Iowa in 1886, but by that time, he and his family had moved to Logan County, Kansas, where they settled in Oakley in July of 1885. In his last days, Samuel C. Arie was sent to the Kansas State Insane Asylum for treatment and died there on June 15, 1889.
The Saturday June 22, 1889 edition of the OAKLEY OPINION newspaper, of Oakley, Kansas carried the following obituary;
"DIED
On Saturday, June 15, Samuel C. Arie died at the State Insane Asylum at Topeka, where he had recently been sent for treatment. The remains were shipped here to relatives and buried under the auspices of the G. A. R., of which he was a member, in presence of a vast assemblage of friends who came to pay their last respects to the deceased.
Mr. Arie was forty-eight years, three months and twelve days of age, was one of Logan counties first settlers, having settled here in July, 1885, and was a prosperous and industrious farmer. He came here from Watcheer, Keokuk County, Ia., where as here he enjoyed the respect and friendship of all who knew him. He was a Christian gentleman and a member of the Prebyterian church. Rev. J. H. Morgan conducted the funeral services and the large concourse of people that attended the interment was proof of the high esteem in which the deceased was held. His mental affliction had been a recent date and it was hoped that after a short term of treatment he would return cured.
We extend our sincere condolence to the relatives of the deceased and especially to the widow, who among the terrible breakers of fate has the hearts of all in this community go out to her in sympathy.
Shall we, in our part knowledge, say, 'tis not well; when He in his omniscience say'tis his will?"
The mortal remains of Private Samuel C. Arie were returned to Oakley, Kansas where they were laid to rest in the Saint Joseph Cemetery in Oakley, Kansas.
On October 23, 1889, his widow, Mary D. (Woodring) Arie, was granted a Widow's Pension for Samuel C. Arie service in the Civil War. According to a site on familysearch.org Samuel Cabot Arie (Airey) was born on March 3, 1841 in Ohio and died on June 15, 1889 in Oakley, Kansas.
At the time of the 1900 census, Mary D. Arie is found, widowed, in the Village of Orangeville, Oneco Township, Stephenson County, Illinois She is listed as being 49 and was born in October of 1851. She had no children according to this census.
Mary D. Arie died on March 17, 1930 in Orangeville, Stephenson County, Illinois at the age of 78. Her birthdate is given as October 12, 1851 in North Hampton County, Pennsylvania and her parents were Daniel Woodring, who was born in Penn., and Catherine Zetter, who was also born in Penn. Mary was listed as a housewife and her husband was Samuel Arie. Her mortal remains were laid to rest on 20 Mar 1930 in the Orangeville Cemetery in Orangeville, Stephenson County, Illinois where she resided.

The book "List of Ex-Soldiers, Sailors and Marines Living in Iowa, by Adjutant-General William L. Alexander, printed in, 1886" has Samuel C. Arie living in What Cheer, Keokuk County, Iowa in 1886, but by that time, he and his family had moved to Logan County, Kansas, where they settled in Oakley in July of 1885. In his last days, Samuel C. Arie was sent to the Kansas State Insane Asylum for treatment and died there on June 15, 1889.
The Saturday June 22, 1889 edition of the OAKLEY OPINION newspaper, of Oakley, Kansas carried the following obituary;
"DIED
On Saturday, June 15, Samuel C. Arie died at the State Insane Asylum at Topeka, where he had recently been sent for treatment. The remains were shipped here to relatives and buried under the auspices of the G. A. R., of which he was a member, in presence of a vast assemblage of friends who came to pay their last respects to the deceased.
Mr. Arie was forty-eight years, three months and twelve days of age, was one of Logan counties first settlers, having settled here in July, 1885, and was a prosperous and industrious farmer. He came here from Watcheer, Keokuk County, Ia., where as here he enjoyed the respect and friendship of all who knew him. He was a Christian gentleman and a member of the Prebyterian church. Rev. J. H. Morgan conducted the funeral services and the large concourse of people that attended the interment was proof of the high esteem in which the deceased was held. His mental affliction had been a recent date and it was hoped that after a short term of treatment he would return cured.
We extend our sincere condolence to the relatives of the deceased and especially to the widow, who among the terrible breakers of fate has the hearts of all in this community go out to her in sympathy.
Shall we, in our part knowledge, say, 'tis not well; when He in his omniscience say'tis his will?"
The mortal remains of Private Samuel C. Arie were returned to Oakley, Kansas where they were laid to rest in the Saint Joseph Cemetery in Oakley, Kansas.
On October 23, 1889, his widow, Mary D. (Woodring) Arie, was granted a Widow's Pension for Samuel C. Arie service in the Civil War. According to a site on familysearch.org Samuel Cabot Arie (Airey) was born on March 3, 1841 in Ohio and died on June 15, 1889 in Oakley, Kansas.
At the time of the 1900 census, Mary D. Arie is found, widowed, in the Village of Orangeville, Oneco Township, Stephenson County, Illinois She is listed as being 49 and was born in October of 1851. She had no children according to this census.
Mary D. Arie died on March 17, 1930 in Orangeville, Stephenson County, Illinois at the age of 78. Her birthdate is given as October 12, 1851 in North Hampton County, Pennsylvania and her parents were Daniel Woodring, who was born in Penn., and Catherine Zetter, who was also born in Penn. Mary was listed as a housewife and her husband was Samuel Arie. Her mortal remains were laid to rest on 20 Mar 1930 in the Orangeville Cemetery in Orangeville, Stephenson County, Illinois where she resided.

Samuel C. Arie was born on March 3, 1841 in Clinton County, Indiana, one of a number of children born to Joseph Arie and Nancy (Humphrey/Humphries/Humphreys) Arie. Joseph was born on June 12, 1794 in Greenbrier, Virginia (now West Virginia), while Nancy (Humphries) Arie was born on August 13, 1815 in a section of Virginia that also was to become part of West Virginia. Joseph Arie was a veteran of the War of 1812 having served as a Private in Capt. McLaughlin's Co. from Virginia.
Joseph Arie and Nancy Humprey/Humpreys were almost certainly married in the 1830's and are known to have had the following children;
1. William Arie, born in Greenbrier County, Virginia on December 2, 1833; William was married to Valerie R. Maxey c. 1857; Valerie R. Maxey was born on April 27, 1838 and died on December 15, 1876; William was then married 2nd to Mary C. Hockenberry on August 12, 1877 in Knox County, Illinois. In the 1860 census, William is found as head of household at Persifer Twp, Knox Co, IL; In the 1880 census, William is found as head of household at Galesburg, Knox Co, IL. William died on December 27, 1905 at Knox Co, IL at age 72. His mortal remains are believed to lie in the Westfall Cemetery in Victoria, Knox County, Illinois.
2. Anthony Arie, born c. June 14, 1836 in Ohio; Anthony was a member of Co. K of the 83rd Illinois during the Civil War; Anthony was married to Matilda Holland on August 10, 1866, but, they are believed to have been divorced in Galesburg, Illinois on October 21, 1876; Anthony is believed to have later been married to Anna "Maggie" ___________; At the time of the 1910, this is believed to be our Anthony Arie living in Sparta, Knox County, Illinois. His parents are both listed as having been born in Virginia;
