CHAPEL HILL - Ruth Eliot Black, 86, died on November 2, 2008, at Britthaven Nursing Home in Chapel Hill.
Ruth, the daughter of John and Ethel Eliot, was a born on March 7, 1922, in New York City, N.Y. She was a graduate of Mt. Holyoke College in South Hadley, Mass., and the Presbyterian School of Christian Education in Richmond, Va.
She moved to Chapel Hill in 1964 as the Director of Christian Education for University Presbyterian Church. She later became a charter member of The Church of Reconciliation. She was active in her church, particularly in the area of education, as well as in the community for issues of peace, justice, the elderly and politics.
She is predeceased by three of her children, Laurance Deacon Black, Beverly Black Richardson, and Barbara Ann Black. She is survived by her daughter, Deborah Black Carroll and son-in-law, Don, of Raleigh; grandchildren, Heather Hill and husband, Jon, of Apex; Lindsay Carroll, of Cary; great grandchildren, Andrew and Sidney Hill; and, sister, Sona MacMillan, of Santa Barbara, Calif.
A memorial service will be held at the Church of Reconciliation, 110 N. Elliott Rd., Chapel Hill, at 2 p.m. on Thursday, November 6, 2008. Visitation will follow at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Church of Reconciliation, 110 N. Elliot Rd, Chapel Hill, NC 27514.
