U.S. Congressman, Michigan Governor. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was a store clerk when he joined the Union Army in 1861 and later obtained to rank as a Captain, in the 10th Regiment, New York Volunteer Cavalry. After the war, he moved to Saginaw, Michigan, where became successful in the lumber industry. He also was one of the organizers and a director of the Citizenís National Bank. He was a member of the Michigan State Senate in 1882 and was on the staff of the commander in chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, (1885-88). In 1889, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-first Congress, serving until 1891. After leaving Congress, he resumed the lumber business and engaged in banking. He was also department commander of the Grand Army of the Republic in Michigan, in 1897. In 1901, he was elected as a Republican the 25th Michigan Governor, serving until 1905. During his time in office, the Michigan Employment Institution for the Adult Blind was established in Saginaw, a state highway department was formed and railroad taxation was sanctioned. After his Governorship, he lived in retirement until his death at age 69. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
