The surviving members of the 86th Illinois began holding reunions in 1887 on the 25th Anniversary of their being mustered into service. At that time, the surviving members of the 86th Illinois were of the belief that Private Robert S. Chambers was deceased.
Today, July 15, 2012, I walked through Maple Ridge Cemetery. I found the 142 year old tombstone on the grave of Rhoda B. Chambers. It is still fairly legible after 142 years. It is located on the southeast side of the cemetery near the road. There is a vacant space just to the north of Rhoda's stone, perhaps enough space for a grave or two. This may very well be where Robert S. Chambers is buried.
