On April 12, 2021, Bruce Morton Garver wrote this "bio" for John Wesley McLain (1840-1912) who was born on July 8, 1840, in Preble County, Ohio, to native Ohioans David McLain (1811 - 1854) and Mary Emerson McLain (1813 - 1893). Of David's and Mary's five children, John Wesley McLain was the second to be born. His four siblings, in the order of their birth, are: (1) Benjamin F. McLain (1836–1897), (3) Nancy J. McLain (Danner, 1843–1926), (4) Rebecca McLain (Yingling, 1846–1935), and (5) Eliza McLain (Guiller, 1853–1934).

During the American Civil War, Private John Wesley McLain served in Company "H" of the 167th Regiment of Ohio infantry in the U. S. Army. Circa 1870, in Ohio, John Wesley McClain wed Elizabeth Randolph (McLain, 1852-1883), whose parents have not yet been identified by name. Together, John Wesley McClain and Elizabeth (Randolph) McClain raised two children who are here listed in the order of their birth and whose Find a Grave Memorials are linked to each other and to those of their parents:
(1) Daisy McLain (Pogue, 1879–1952) wed Lawrence Elwood Pogue (1879–1953) and raised two sons: Jesse Malcolm Pogue (1905–1993) and George M. Pogue (1909–1974).
(2) Jesse Randolph McLain (1881–1914) is not known ever to have been married.

After the death of Elizabeth (Randolph) McClain at the age of thirty on on March 23, 1883, John Wesley McLain did not remarry and either alone or with the assistance of relatives raised daughter Daisy and son Jesse to adulthood. On January 2, 1912, John Wesley McLain died at the age of seventy-one at Somerville in Milford Township of Butler, County, Ohio, and was interred there in Somerville Cemetery alongside the grave of his wife, Elizabeth (Randolph) McClain, who had died nearly twenty-nine years earlier on March 23, 1883.
