Emma Gayle was the daughter of John Preston Gayle and Mary Shieder. Her father enlisted in the Confederate States Army, Company D, 2nd South Carolina Regiment and was paroled 13 April 1865. He surrendered with Gen. Robert E. Lee at Appomattox. She married William Holman McFadden.
Along with her mother, Emma was a charter member in November 1895 of Martha Reid 19, UDC (United Daughters of the Confederacy). Her approved application was approved on 02 June 1898. She proved herself in at all levels by taking a lead role in her chapter, division & general organization. She was a Chapter President and Honorary President of the Florida Division UDC. Before Emma's death she was further honored with the Children of the Confederacy (COC) Chapter, sponsored by Martha Reid 19, being named for her. The Emma Gayle McFadden Chapter No. 423 COC was chartered on 01 May 1950.
