Philip Hindbaugh was born c. December 23, 1811 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. Philip was one of about eight children born to Jonathan W. Hindbaugh/Hinebaugh, who was born c. 1790 in Pennsylvania, Mary (Shough/Showe) Hindbaugh, who was born c. 1796 in Pennsylvania. Another son, Showe Hinebaugh was born 5 Apr 1832 in Pennsylvania and died on 24 Nov 1915 at the age of 83. Showe's mortal remains were laid in the Dunkirk Cemetery in Dunkirk, Hardin County, Ohio. Jonathan W. Hinebaugh/Hindbaugh died in October of 1834. Mary (Showe) Hinebaugh/Hindbaugh, who was born 15 Oct 1796, was in 1860 residing in Blanchard, Hardin County, Ohio;

Philip Hindbaugh was married to Mary "Polly" Shreve on June 7, 1839 in Tazewell County, Illinois by the Rev. Nathan Curtiss, one of the very first itinerant Methodist ministers in the area. Mary was born on March 16, 1818, one of at least eight children born to Israel Shreve, who was born on August 10, 1789 in Loudon Co. Virginia and died on August 3, 1861 in Tazewell County, Illinois, and Elizabeth (Howe) Shreve. The Shreve family resided in Decatur County, Indiana for some time, and then, most likely in the mid 1830's, Israel and Elizabeth brought the family west to Illinois, where they settled in Tazewell County. They resided first in Elm Grove Township, where they remained two years. Then they moved on to Section 23 in Morton Township, where they remained the rest of their lives. Their earthly remains were laid to rest in the Buckeye Cemetery in Tazewell County, Illinois.
Nine children are believed to have been born to Philip and Mary. They are;
1. Margaret A. "Martha" Hindbaugh; born __________ __, 1839/40; transcribed as Morgan in the 1850 census; married to __________ O'Neil in 185__; They had at least one daughter, Julia A. O'Neil, born c. 1857; Martha and Julia are found residing with Martha's parents in the 1870 census.
2. John Wesley Hindbaugh; born June 25, 1842/43 in Illinois. John Wesley Heinbaugh was married to Elizabeth Ann Wirt on October 16, 1866 in Tazewell County, Illinois. John died October 27, 1920. See his Find A Grave Biography.
3. Elizabeth Jane "Betsy" Hindbaugh; born c. 1845; married to Joseph Hutchinson on __________ __, 186__ at ___________, Illinois; They had at least one son, Joseph, born c. 1867; Mrs. Elizabeth Jane Hutchinson was married to Isaac Salts (Saultz) on March 3, 1873 in Fulton County. Illinois.
4. Martha Lulu Hindbaugh, born c. 1845/46 in Tazewell County, Illinois.
5. Sevilla Ellen Hindbaugh; born March __, 1846/48/49; Sevilla Ellen Heinbaugh was married to William Salts (Saultz) on August 3, 1872 in Adams County, Illinois. This was the 2nd marriage for William Salts. William had at least three children from his 1st marriage. At least two more children were born to William and Sevilla;

B. Homer Elmer Salts/Saltz, born c. February 25/28, 1878 in Illinois. When Homer Elmer Saltz registered for the draft in 1917-1918 in Hancock County, Illinois his birth date was recorded as February 28, 1878. Homer Elmer Saltz died on 26 February 1949 and his mortal remains were laid in the Memorial Park Cemetery in Muscatine, Muscatine County, Iowa. On August 13, 1862, Philip's son, John Wesley, volunteered in Deer Creek, Illinois to serve in a company which was being raised in the Washington/Deer Creek area of Tazewell County by William B. Bogardus, a portrait artist from Washington, Illinois. When Bogardus had about 90 volunteers, he led the Washington/Deer Creek company into Peoria, where they went into camp at Camp Lyon, near present day Glen Oak Park. On August 27, 1862, Bogardus and 86 of his volunteers were mustered into service as Co. G of the 86th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry. For the next 16 months, Private John Wesley Hindbaugh served faithfully as the men of the 86th served in Kentucky, Tennessee and Georgia and participated in the Battles of Perryville, Kentucky and Chickamauga, Georgia. By the end of the year 1863, the elements and the Confederates left Co. G with no more than 66 men of the original 87. So the Army sent Recruiters to Peoria County to try to get some volunteers to bolster the ranks of the 86th.
Late in 1863 and early in 1864, a Captain Allan was in Peoria trying to find some volunteers to help fill up those thinned ranks of the 86th Illinois. From December 26, 1863 to February 1, 1864, Captain Allan worked in the Peoria area getting recruits for the 86th. During this time, he got 31 men to volunteer to serve as Recruits for the 86th. Nine of these were for Co. G. Among them was now Private Philip Hindbaugh who went into Peoria on January 4, 1864 and volunteered to serve beside his son in Co. G.

During the first days of January of 1864, the men of the 86th preparing for the winter and building shanties near McAfee's Church in north Georgia on the south edge of the Chickamauga Battlefield. Private Philip Hindbaugh and the other 8 volunteers probably joined his son and the rest of the Washington/Deer Creek/Morton company, Co. G, by the end of January or in early February while they were still here. For the next 16 months, 40 year old Private Philip Hindbaugh and Private John Wesley Hindbaugh, who had celebrated his 20 birthday in June of 1863 in Tennessee while in the service of his country, served side by side as the men of the 86th took part in the Atlanta Campaign of 1864, the Carolina Campaign of 1865 and, of course, marched with "Sherman to the Sea." During this time they were witness to and participants in some of the bloodiest fighting in the Western Theatre of the war, including the Battles of Resaca, Georgia; Rome, Georgia, Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia; Peach Tree Creek, Georgia; Jonesboro, Georgia, Averasboro, North Carolina and Bentonville, North Carolina to name a few.
A few weeks after the defeat and surrender of Confederate General Johnston's Army to that of General Sherman, the war came to a close. The men of McCook's Brigade marched on to Washington City (now D.C.) where they participated in the Grand Review. Private John Wesley Hindbaugh as an original member of the 86th was mustered out of the service on June 6, 1865 in Washington with the other original volunteers. However, Private Philip Hindbaugh, as a late war Recruit, was transferred to the 34th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry for a little more duty. About June 2, 1865, Private Philip Hindbaugh and 7 of the other 8 late war recruits were transferred to Co. C of the 34th.

Mrs. Clark was born in c. 1827 in Ohio the daughter of David Sours and Susannah (________) Sours. Mrs. Clark was previously married to a John M. Clark. John and Eleanor are believed to have had at least six children, the last, a son, named John Clark, who was born about 1865 and who is residing with Philip and Eleanor Hindbaugh in Bethel Township, McDonough County, Illinois at the time of the 1880 census. At the time they got married, Philip listed his residence as Schuyler County, while Ellen lists hers as McDonough County. So at this time it appears that after they were married, Philip went to live at Ellen's place in McDonough County. At the time of the 1880 census, they are found in Bethel, McDonough County, Illinois;

Lida Jane "Janie" (Crabb) Reeder, a great great granddaughter-in-law, told me that "Lewis V. Hindbaugh was really the only surviving child of Isreal's (son of Phillip Hindbaugh) that had any interest in the family history. His (Lewis') two brothers were both mentally handicapped. We visited with him a lot and he provided us with all of the information that he had. It was his belief that his grandfather Philip Hindbaugh was deaf the last few years of his life and that he had been killed by a train in Havana, Illinois. He never mentioned Philip's 2nd marriage."
Philip Hindbaugh most likely died before 1890. Ellen (Sours) Clark Hindbaugh is known to have gone west, probably to live with one of her children, where she died in 1897 in Raymond, Knox County, Nebraska.

Mrs. Clark was born in c. 1827 in Ohio the daughter of David Sours and Susannah (________) Sours. Mrs. Clark was previously married to a John M. Clark. John and Eleanor are believed to have had at least six children, the last, a son, named John Clark, who was born about 1865 and who is residing with Philip and Eleanor Hindbaugh in Bethel Township, McDonough County, Illinois at the time of the 1880 census. At the time they got married, Philip listed his residence as Schuyler County, while Ellen lists hers as McDonough County. So at this time it appears that after they were married, Philip went to live at Ellen's place in McDonough County. Hindbaugh was really the only surviving child of Isreal's (son of Phillip Hindbaugh) that had any interest in the family history. His (Lewis') two brothers were both mentally handicapped. We visited with him a lot and he provided us with all of the information that he had. It was his belief that his grandfather Philip Hindbaugh was deaf the last few years of his life and that he had been killed by a train in Havana, Illinois. He never mentioned Philip's 2nd marriage."
Philip Hindbaugh most likely died before 1890. Ellen (Sours) Clark Hindbaugh is known to have gone west, probably to live with one of her children, where she died in 1897 in Raymond, Knox County, Nebraska.

Philip Hindbaugh was born c. December 23, 1811 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. Philip was one of about eight children born to Jonathan W. Hindbaugh/Hinebaugh, who was born c. 1790 in Pennsylvania, Mary (Shough/Showe) Hindbaugh, who was born c. 1796 in Pennsylvania. Another son, Showe Hinebaugh was born 5 Apr 1832 in Pennsylvania and died on 24 Nov 1915 at the age of 83. Showe's mortal remains were laid in the Dunkirk Cemetery in Dunkirk, Hardin County, Ohio. Jonathan W. Hinebaugh/Hindbaugh died in October of 1834. Mary (Showe) Hinebaugh/Hindbaugh, who was born 15 Oct 1796, was in 1860 residing in Blanchard, Hardin County, Ohio;

Philip Hindbaugh was married to Mary "Polly" Shreve on June 7, 1839 in Tazewell County, Illinois by the Rev. Nathan Curtiss, one of the very first itinerant Methodist ministers in the area. Mary was born on March 16, 1818, one of at least eight children born to Israel Shreve, who was born on August 10, 1789 in Loudon Co. Virginia and died on August 3, 1861 in Tazewell County, Illinois, and Elizabeth (Howe) Shreve. The Shreve family resided in Decatur County, Indiana for some time, and then, most likely in the mid 1830's, Israel and Elizabeth brought the family west to Illinois, where they settled in Tazewell County. They resided first in Elm Grove Township, where they remained two years. Then they moved on to Section 23 in Morton Township, where they remained the rest of their lives. Their earthly remains were laid to rest in the Buckeye Cemetery in Tazewell County, Illinois.
Nine children are believed to have been born to Philip and Mary. They are;

On August 13, 1862, Philip's son, John Wesley, volunteered in Deer Creek, Illinois to serve in a company which was being raised in the Washington/Deer Creek area of Tazewell County by William B. Bogardus, a portrait artist from Washington, Illinois. When Bogardus had about 90 volunteers, he led the Washington/Deer Creek company into Peoria, where they went into camp at Camp Lyon, near present day Glen Oak Park. On August 27, 1862, Bogardus and 86 of his volunteers were mustered into service as Co. G of the 86th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry. For the next 16 months, Private John Wesley Hindbaugh served faithfully as the men of the 86th served in Kentucky, Tennessee and Georgia and participated in the Battles of Perryville, Kentucky and Chickamauga, Georgia. By the end of the year 1863, the elements and the Confederates left Co. G with no more than 66 men of the original 87. So the Army sent Recruiters to Peoria County to try to get some volunteers to bolster the ranks of the 86th.
Late in 1863 and early in 1864, a Captain Allan was in Peoria trying to find some volunteers to help fill up those thinned ranks of the 86th Illinois. From December 26, 1863 to February 1, 1864, Captain Allan worked in the Peoria area getting recruits for the 86th. During this time, he got 31 men to volunteer to serve as Recruits for the 86th. Nine of these were for Co. G. Among them was now Private Philip Hindbaugh who went into Peoria on January 4, 1864 and volunteered to serve beside his son in Co. G.

During the first days of January of 1864, the men of the 86th preparing for the winter and building shanties near McAfee's Church in north Georgia on the south edge of the Chickamauga Battlefield. Private Philip Hindbaugh and the other 8 volunteers probably joined his son and the rest of the Washington/Deer Creek/Morton company, Co. G, by the end of January or in early February while they were still here. For the next 16 months, 40 year old Private Philip Hindbaugh and Private John Wesley Hindbaugh, who had celebrated his 20 birthday in June of 1863 in Tennessee while in the service of his country, served side by side as the men of the 86th took part in the Atlanta Campaign of 1864, the Carolina Campaign of 1865 and, of course, marched with "Sherman to the Sea." During this time they were witness to and participants in some of the bloodiest fighting in the Western Theatre of the war, including the Battles of Resaca, Georgia; Rome, Georgia, Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia; Peach Tree Creek, Georgia; Jonesboro, Georgia, Averasboro, North Carolina and Bentonville, North Carolina to name a few.
A few weeks after the defeat and surrender of Confederate General Johnston's Army to that of General Sherman, the war came to a close. The men of McCook's Brigade marched on to Washington City (now D.C.) where they participated in the Grand Review. Private John Wesley Hindbaugh as an original member of the 86th was mustered out of the service on June 6, 1865 in Washington with the other original volunteers. However, Private Philip Hindbaugh, as a late war Recruit, was transferred to the 34th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry for a little more duty. About June 2, 1865, Private Philip Hindbaugh and 7 of the other 8 late war recruits were transferred to Co. C of the 34th.

On August 13, 1862, Philip's son, John Wesley, volunteered in Deer Creek, Illinois to serve in a company which was being raised in the Washington/Deer Creek area of Tazewell County by William B. Bogardus, a portrait artist from Washington, Illinois. When Bogardus had about 90 volunteers, he led the Washington/Deer Creek company into Peoria, where they went into camp at Camp Lyon, near present day Glen Oak Park. On August 27, 1862, Bogardus and 86 of his volunteers were mustered into service as Co. G of the 86th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry. For the next 16 months, Private John Wesley Hindbaugh served faithfully as the men of the 86th served in Kentucky, Tennessee and Georgia and participated in the Battles of Perryville, Kentucky and Chickamauga, Georgia. By the end of the year 1863, the elements and the Confederates left Co. G with no more than 66 men of the original 87. So the Army sent Recruiters to Peoria County to try to get some volunteers to bolster the ranks of the 86th.
Late in 1863 and early in 1864, a Captain Allan was in Peoria trying to find some volunteers to help fill up those thinned ranks of the 86th Illinois. From December 26, 1863 to February 1, 1864, Captain Allan worked in the Peoria area getting recruits for the 86th. During this time, he got 31 men to volunteer to serve as Recruits for the 86th. Nine of these were for Co. G. Among them was now Private Philip Hindbaugh who went into Peoria on January 4, 1864 and volunteered to serve beside his son in Co. G.

Remarks TRANS TO CO C 34 ILL INF MAY 18, 1865
During the first days of January of 1864, the men of the 86th preparing for the winter and building shanties near McAfee's Church in north Georgia on the south edge of the Chickamauga Battlefield. Private Philip Hindbaugh and the other 8 volunteers probably joined his son and the rest of the Washington/Deer Creek/Morton company, Co. G, by the end of January or in early February while they were still here. For the next 16 months, 40 year old Private Philip Hindbaugh and Private John Wesley Hindbaugh, who had celebrated his 20 birthday in June of 1863 in Tennessee while in the service of his country, served side by side as the men of the 86th took part in the Atlanta Campaign of 1864, the Carolina Campaign of 1865 and, of course, marched with "Sherman to the Sea." During this time they were witness to and participants in some of the bloodiest fighting in the Western Theatre of the war, including the Battles of Resaca, Georgia; Rome, Georgia, Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia; Peach Tree Creek, Georgia; Jonesboro, Georgia, Averasboro, North Carolina and Bentonville, North Carolina to name a few.
A few weeks after the defeat and surrender of Confederate General Johnston's Army to that of General Sherman, the war came to a close. The men of McCook's Brigade marched on to Washington City (now D.C.) where they participated in the Grand Review. Private John Wesley Hindbaugh as an original member of the 86th was mustered out of the service on June 6, 1865 in Washington with the other original volunteers. However, Private Philip Hindbaugh, as a late war Recruit, was transferred to the 34th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry for a little more duty. About June 2, 1865, Private Philip Hindbaugh and 7 of the other 8 late war recruits were transferred to Co. C of the 34th.

Mary "Polly" (Shreve) Hindbaugh must have died in Tazewell County sometime after the 1870 census was taken and before 1880 as on June 3, 1880, Philip Hindbaugh was married to Mrs. Eleanor "Ellen" (Sours) Clark in Macomb, Illinois in McDonough County, Illinois. Mrs. Clark was born in c. 1827 in Ohio the daughter of David Sours and Susannah (________) Sours. Mrs. Clark was previously married to a John M. Clark. John and Eleanor are believed to have had at least six children, the last, a son, named John Clark, who was born about 1865 and who is residing with Philip and Eleanor Hindbaugh in Bethel Township, McDonough County, Illinois at the time of the 1880 census. At the time they got married, Philip listed his residence as Schuyler County, while Ellen lists hers as McDonough County. So at this time it appears that after they were married, Philip went to live at Ellen's place in McDonough County. At the time of the 1880 census, they are found in Bethel, McDonough County, Illinois;

Lida Jane "Janie" (Crabb) Reeder, a great great granddaughter-in-law, told me that "Lewis V. Hindbaugh was really the only surviving child of Isreal's (son of Phillip Hindbaugh) that had any interest in the family history. His (Lewis') two brothers were both mentally handicapped. We visited with him a lot and he provided us with all of the information that he had. It was his belief that his grandfather Philip Hindbaugh was deaf the last few years of his life and that he had been killed by a train in Havana, Illinois. He never mentioned Philip's 2nd marriage."
Philip Hindbaugh most likely died before 1890. Ellen (Sours) Clark Hindbaugh is known to have gone west, probably to live with one of her children, where she died in 1897 in Raymond, Knox County, Nebraska.
