Harry Roderick McPhail

Harry Roderick McPhail died Friday, August 8, 2003.

He was the third of six children born to Harry Bert and
Mary Anderson McPhail. His family moved to Scranton in 1908, where he graduated from high school. Mr. McPhail
taught seventh and eight-grade classes in Scranton in 1925 and 1926, and was a teacher and principal Lincoln Elementary School in Osage City from 1927 to 1929. He attended Emporia State Colleage for a year. He received a degree in education and business administration from Baker University in 1932. He received a master's degree from Iowa University in 1938.

Mr. McPhail hitchhiked from Baldwin City to Keokuk, Iowa, where he was hried as an elementary principal for two schools, serving as superintendent from 1941 to 1946. He became director of elementary schools in Davenport, Iowa, followed by being named superintendent of Schools in Ames, Iowa, and Freeport, Ill.

He ended his professional career as regional director of
Illinois State Department of Public Instruction in Springfield, Ill., from 1963 to 1971, when he retired.
He moved to Topeka from California in 1985.

Mr. McPhail was a 76-year member of AF&AM, past master of Scranton Lodge No. 407 and Lodge No. 12 in Keokuk, Iowa.
He also was a member of Scottish Rite Bodies in Topeka and Susanna Wesley United Methodist Church. He also was a member of the Zeta Chi fraternity at Baker University.

He married Jennie Louise Potts in 1933 in Chillicothe, Mo.
She preceded him in death Oct 12, 1993. He married Edna Louise Zimmerman in 1994 in Topkea. She survives.

Other survivors include two stepsons, two stepgrandchildren, and many nieces and nedphews.

Mr. McPhail was cremated. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Wesley Hall at Aldersgate Village, followed
by graveside services in Scranton Cemetery at Scranton.
