Son of S.W.R. Jones
Jesse Berryman Jones was the eighth child of S.W.R. Jones and Elizabeth Allen. He would have seven more siblings to follow him.
He was an active, adventurous child who hurt himself multiple times through his own actions.
He walked two miles from his home at The Nook to Waconda, District 13 School. It was a rough walk with a road of mudholes, foot logs to manuever and climbs along split rail fences. He was remembered carrying his small sisters over difficult places.
Jesse finished his schooling at McMinnville College.
He taught grammar school and high school before finding his calling while living with some Baptists in North Palestine while he spent three years there teaching and preaching. The church ordained him there and he would meet his future wife, Julia Bell while in North Palestine.
On February 28, 1872, Jesse and Julia were married in Amity Baptist Church by Father Chandler, the long time dear friend of the Jones family.
On the same day as their marriage, Jesse B. Jones was ordained in the same place as a Minister of the Gospel. In the Baptist Annals of Oregon, Jesse is listed as the forty-second pioneer Baptist preacher.
Julia and Jesse had their first three children at The Nook. Jesse was a Circuit Rider Preacher and rode many miles spreading the Gospel through the wilderness of Clackamas County.
Their nine children were: Grace Bell (Austin) (1873); Argyll Mary (Harris) (1875); Stanley Edward (1879 – died of Diphtheria 1878); Alice Maud (1879 – died of Whooping Cough at 6 weeks of age); Arthur Dean (1880); David Scott Elton (1883); Jesse Buford (1885); Stephen Wallace Ray (1888) and George Clay (1890).
In 1876 there was a reorganization of the Clear Creek Church and Jesse preached at three different locations.
In 1882 Jesse and Julia moved their family to Eastern Oregon where they lived along the John Day River. In December 1883 there were several successful meetings and a church organized at Shuttler's Flat, Eastern Oregon.
In 1887 they were back just north of the S.W.R. Jones home known as Narcisse Place.
In 1888 he organized the Hayesville Church.
In 1909 Jesse passed away at the age of 61. He was buried between his wife and mother.
