He married Mary Jane Fry on 5 Oct 1903 and they had several children. A son Newell age 1 month died on 12 August 1904 and is buried in the Bisbee Cemetery. Eva born 1911 died 1912 while they were visiting Mary Jane's family in Oklahoma and is buried there. Those that lived were their sons Robert L., Harris S., David H. and a daughter Ruth Fry all born in Arizona.

Sam served as an Arizona Territorial Ranger from 1903 to 1909. He was one of only 107 original Rangers. After the Rangers were disbanded in 1909, he served as a Douglas City Police officer, a deputy sheriff and a customs inspector.

He and his family were honored by the present day Arizona Rangers with a special grave marking ceremony on 15 May 2009 to recognize his service to the State.
