Old Butte Man A Death Victim

A. B. Cohen Took Up residence in Mining City Year of Custer Massacre

A. B. Cohen, Butte's oldest male resident, from the standpoint of years lived in the Mining city, died at a hospital there recently.

In 1876 - the year of the Custer massacre - Cohen came to Butte as a boy of seven with Dooley Jacobs, son of the man who later became the first mayor of Butte. The family home of the Cohens in Montana up to that time had been in Deer Lodge. Mr. Cohen said Butte was a village of about 300 people when he came here.

The pioneer resident attended school in a log cabin in the present city library block.

He was a native of Austin, Minn. Known to hundreds as "Abe" Cohen, as a young man he took an active interest in Butte affairs. he was active in lodge and civic work and also in politics. He entered the cigar and liquor business and followed that for years.

In politics he was a democrat but numbered his friends by the hundreds also in other parties. He served as a city alderman for a number of terms and also was a member of the state legislature for Silver Bow County. He also served a term as Justice of the peace in Silver Bow township.

He was a charter member and was one of the prime movers in the organization of the Butte Pioneer club in which he took a very active interest until the last. On many occasions he arranged and was chairman of the annual memorial service held by the club. At the "old-timers" ball staged annually by the club since its organization he was invariabley called upon to lead the grand march and did it with pomp and grace that characterized such dances a century or more ago.

During the administration of the late Mayor Charles A. Hauswirth, Mr. Cohen was for several years one of the prime movers in the revival of the old time Fourth of July celebrations. He always was willing to lend every effort within his power to make Butte a better place in which to live and to afford the people of the Mining City wholesome entertainment.
