Lieutenant Harding was murdered by a bar patron at 9th and Walnut Sts. where he was investigating a report of trouble. After he entered the saloon a man immediately shot him in the shoulder and back with a gun. The fleeing shooter was then shot and killed by another police officer. Lt. Harding was a Civil War veteran and was survived by a wife and five children.
