The sixth son and tenth child of Dyer and Auralia White (Wetmore) Fitch, Elisha was about 29 years old when he enlisted in the Union army on 13 June 1861. He was mustered into the 21st Regiment, Illinois Infantry, Company I on 28 June 1861. When and where isn't known, but Elisha was captured by the Confederates and held at Libby Prison, where he died.
Elisha's half-siblings by his father's first wife, Hanna Hadassa Hicock, were Chester Hicock, Philonso Skipio, Nancy Sophina, and Harriet Alvina. By his father's second wife and Elisha's aunt, Betsey Parsons Wetmore, another half-sibling was Dyer Wetmore. His siblings by his mother were Mary Elisabeth, Charles DeWitt, George Clinton, Mariah Louisa, and Samuel Augustus.
One of his brothers, Charles DeWitt, also served in the Civil War, but in a different unit. Charles survived the war and died at the military hospital in Leavenworth, Kansas in 1890. Charles is buried in the national cemetery at Leavenworth.
