Methodist minister. Captain in and principal recruiter of Co. F, 97th Indiana Infantry, Civil War. Died at Camp Sherman near Black River, Mississippi. Son of William Gilmore and Ruth (Duhling) Dean. Married Emily Jane Folsom in Greene County, Indiana, 1853.
As an acting Major, Dean fought bravely through the Jackson, Mississippi campaign of July 1863, according to his commanding officer, but he was struck by a spent ball and later became seriously ill from Typhoid Fever and died less than two weeks after the completion of the campaign. Officers of the Regiment were granted leave to accompany Dean's body back to Indiana for burial.
A collection of his Civil War letters are archived at the Indiana Historical Society.
