David Haskell Whittlesey enlisted Sept. 4, 1861, at Janesville, WI, in the 13th Regiment, Company A, Wisconsin Infantry; promoted to third sergeant, Oct. 17, 1861. He died of typhoid fever and was laid to rest at the soldiers' cemetery in Lawrence. (Source: Whittlesey-Whittelsey Genealogy; he is No. 2057 in the 1992 edition.) The 1860 US Census lists him as a farmer at Durant, IA, where he had settled with his parents and other relatives about 1857.
