Killed in action along with 33 other shipmates while aboard the USS Liberty when attacked by planes and torpedo boats of the State of Israel.∼U. S. Navy Communications Technician 3rd class Thomas Ray Thornton affectingly known as “Tommy” was killed when Israel attacked with jets and torpedo boats, the U. S. S. LIBERTY AGTR-5 in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea on June 8, 1967. He was born in Springfield, Ohio on February 1, 1944, to William R. And Anna (Fay) Thornton. His sister Joann Nuss grew up with Tommy when they lived on North Race Street. He was a member of the North High School track team and distinguished himself during the period 1960-1962 when he was awarded trophies for his accomplishments. Thomas graduated from high school in 1962 and continued his education at Ohio State University. He later joined the U.S. Navy on July 27.1965 with hopes of returning to school following his military obligation. He was one terrific folk style guitar playing. He took the time to teach another shipmate how to play and together they played for the cookouts and once at the Ambassador’s house in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, Africa with Captain McGonagle.
