U.S. Navy Communications Technician Seaman (E3) Carl Christian Nygren, a wounded survivor of the attack, was born in Williamsport, Pennsylvania to Mr. and Mrs. Arvid C. Nygren. He had been on active duty since 1965. He died in the Naval Security Group Intelligence Department spaces aboard the ship when the torpedo exploded. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery with his shipmates of the USS LIBERTY
