Art Lovell was in monument business 60 years; rites Thursday. James Art Lovell, known to his many friends and business associates as Art and for many years owner of the Lovell Monument Co., and very active in Masonic affairs, died Sunday at Witham Memorial Hospital. He was 76 and had been in failing health several years and seriously ill the past six months. Lovell was a native of Louisville, Ky., born May 25, 1907, a son of Archie N. and Sarah E. (Dawes) Lovell. He attended John Herron Art Institute in Indianapolis for four years and started in the monument business at the age of 16 with the Blakely Monument Co. in Indianapolis. He moved from Indianapolis to Lebanon in the early 1940s and owned and operated the Lovell Monument Co. until his retirement in 1980, serving the monument business for 60 years. He was noted as an expert in his field and had many original designs and art work. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Lovell was a member and Past Master of the Boone Masonic Lodge No. 9, a member of the York Rite, Scottish Rite Valley, Murat Shrine, Murat Legion of Honor and Murat Motor Corps. He also was a member of the First Baptist Church, Order of Eastern Star, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, 40 and 8, Elks Lodge, Eagles and Moose, all of Lebanon. He was married June 11, 1977 in Lebanon to Marjorie Gahlmer, who survives and the couple lived at 517 Indian Spring Rd. Surviving also are sons Earl F. of Springfield, Va., Richard of Snohomiah, Wash., James A. of Dickerson, Md., Gilbert of Clearwater, Fla and Philip R. Lovell of Fort Myers, Fla.; a sister Donna Mae McCormick of Indianapolis; a half sister Martha Ann Jones, Indiana. He also leaves four stepchildren, 13 grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren. Last rites are arranged for 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Russell and Hitch Funeral Home with the Rev. Raymond King officiating. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends will be received at the funeral home 2 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and prior to the services Thursday. Masonic rites will be conducted at 8 p.m. Wednesday
