After graduation, he enlisted in the U S Air Force and took basic training at Lackland AFB, Lackland Texas before entering flying school in Louisana. He then transfered to Lubbock Texas for multi engine training starting with the B-25 bomber. He liked the plane so much he stayed in Lubbock as a pilot instructor in the multi engine school.
When the B-25 phased out he started flying the F-105 and prepared for missions during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
He finally left the Air Force after eight years and returned to New York State, where he married in June 1962, in Long Lake NY to Mrs. Karen Elizabeth (Mace) Freeman, the dau of Donald and Ora Mace. He worked for a number of years as a automobile mechanic and then as a salesman for various car dealerships. He last worked as a sales rep for a heavy equipment supplier in the Utica NY area. Richard died on 9-24-1994 at his home in Newport, NY. He is buried in the Short family plot in Winthrop, NY.
