Atha Ellen McLaury Boatright was of Scotch Presbyterian descent. Her father was born in Pennsylvania and went to Missouri with his parents as a young man. He was an ordained Presbyterian minister who came to Oklahoma in 1902. He purchased a claim and lived on the farm south of Cushing until his death in 1932. Atha was 9th of 16 children.
She was a charter member of the Presbyterian Church of Cushing, Oklahoma. She was a member of the DAR...National #242262 dated 4/14/1928, based on paternal ancestor, Richard McClaughry (1739-1819), her great-grandfather. He was a private in Captain George Gilmore's Company of the 16th Reg'mt of New York Troops during Revolutionary War.
She attended elementary school at Lone Oak School, Lincoln Co. Oklahoma and High School in Cushing, OK. She clerked at a dry goods store in Cushing for a number of years prior to her marriage.
Atha was President of the P.E.O.(Philanthropic Educational Organization) and Hypatia Clubs of Cushing and was an active worker in the women's organizations of the local church. She was voted an Honorary Member of the Board of Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian Church, USA.
"I am rich, you know" is one of her remarkable statements. 'We have enough to give and share and for ourselves. It is such riches compared with some days which I remember. I am glad that I am a pioneer and can remember. It makes me know that I am rich!"
