Katie was born 21 Jun 1886 in Bertrand, Phelps, Nebraska to Newton Crawford Westfall and Mary Jane Redman Westfall. Not much is known of her life as a child or young woman or how long she was courted before her marriage 26 Aug 1908 to August E. Peterson.
She and her husband farmed in Phelps County, Nebraska around Bertrand, until his death in 1919 leaving her a young widow (age 33), with 3 daughters and 1 son, oldest being nine and youngest being 16 months old. She tried to care for the farm, but it was to much, so she moved back to Bertrand next door to her parents, raising the children on her own by cleaning others homes.
Katie did not remarry until her children were grown and gone. Marrying Ross M. Phillips on Oct 1, 1945. He was a Veterinarian and a Veteran of WWI. Her only son (Robert Ellwyn Peterson a WWII Vet & father of 4) was killed in a car accident in California just 14 days before she became a widow again with the death of Ross in 1957.
Katie died from complacations from Diabetes on 20 Feb 1959 at the age of 72.
