Pennsylvania, USA
Death: Mar. 12, 2007
Long Beach

Major League Baseball Player. A native of Beaver Meadow, Pennsylvania, Norm Larker overcame the loss of a kidney to have a 6 year Major League career. A left handed hitter and thrower, he could play first base or outfield with equal ease. Known for his exuberance and hustle on the field, he was originally purchased by the Brooklyn Dodgers from Hazleton of the North Atlantic League before the 1950 season. He did not make his Major League debut until April 15, 1958, after the Dodgers moved to Los Angeles. A member of the Dodgers 1959 World Championship team, he appeared in all 6 series games against the Chicago White Sox, batting .188 with 2 walks in 16 at bats. His best year at the plate was 1960, as he knocked in 78 RBI while also batting a career high .323, good enough for second place behind NL batting champion Dick Groat's .325. After batting .272 in 1961, he was selected by the Houston Colt 45's in the expansion draft. He appeared in a career high 147 games in 1962, batting .262 with 63 RBI. Traded by Houston to the Milwaukee Braves for Jim Bolger, Don Nottebart and Connie Grob on November 30, 1962, he batted just .177 in 64 games before being sold to the San Francisco Giants on August 8, 1963, His poor hitting continued with the Giants, as he batted .071 in what would be the final 14 games of his big league career. Over the course of his Major League career, he accrued a .275 average with 32 homers and 271 RBI in 667 league games. (bio by: Frank Russo)
