Death: Mar. 5, 2002

Harry Lanier Beach Foote, 60, died of coronary disease Tuesday, March 5, 2002, at St. Dominic-Jackson Memorial Hospital. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. today and 10 a.m. Friday at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home in Jackson. Services 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with burial in Hazlehurst City Cemetery.

Mr. Foote, a native of Medina, Tenn., grew up in Hazlehurst where his parents owned The Circle L Cab Co., a service station, a cafe and a dress shop.

His professional life was centered in the Jackson area where he was a retired attorney, a public accountant and a real estate investor. He attended Mississippi State University and earned his law degree from Mississippi College School of Law. Mr. Foote was licensed to practice law in courts in Mississippi and several adjacent states and before the U.S. Supreme Court. His earlier law partnerships were with former Attorney General A. F. Sumner and former Governor John Bell Williams. Mr. Foote also was a colonel to the staff of former Mississippi Governor Cliff Finch and an honorary colonel to Alabama Governor George C. Wallace. He also served as attorney for the Board of Trustees for the Mississippi State Institution of Higher Learning and for the State Building Commission. He also served in the Mississippi National Guard and the U. S. Army Reserve.

Mr. Foote was an avid private pilot until prevented by ill health. He was affiliated with the GMC Dixielanders, editing their newsletter and actively restoring two vintage GMC motor coaches.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Verneal Beach Foote and Samuel Erastus Foote of Hazlehurst.

Survivors include: wife, Jerrie S. Foote of Jackson; son, H. Lanier B. (Lanny) Foote II of Terry; daughter, Jennifer Rose Foote of Jackson; daughter-in-law, Angie K. Foote; granddaughter, Allie Rose Foote of Terry; brother, Larry Neal Beach Foote of Madison; step-children, Mr. and Mrs. Byron J. Cheatham and Mr. and Mrs. Shawn Giles of Madison and Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Cheatham III of Yazoo City; and grandchildren Morgan and Cole Cheatham and Grayson, Mae Alex and Gage Giles, all of Madison.

A family member recounted how Lanier often said his quest of education was inspired by stints of manually digging holes for light posts for Mississippi Power and Light, digging water wells and a generous helping of repairing flat truck tires at his father's service station. He lived life to the full, managing to compact 90 years of living into 60, his most recent birthday. According to a family member, "His gruff voice and manner failed to cover his soft heart and unfailing love for family and friends." Foote
