Lloyd Ahlman was the son of Lawrence and Bessie Ahlman of Cleveland, Nebraska. He joined the Navy on March 1, 1943, and was selected for medical training. Ahlman was assigned to the Fourth Marine Division's medical battalion in July, 1944, and joined First Battalion, 24th Marines that September.

Ahlman served with First Battalion until his wounding and evacuation from Iwo Jima in March, 1945. He was hospitalized and did not return to the battalion before the end of the war. Ahlman was honorably discharged on April 1, 1943.
