German immigrant Julius Hebbel was active and well-known as a studio photographer on North Gay Street starting in the late 1870s. He left his estate, including his photography business in trust for his two sons, Julius and Amiel, and the studio continued to operate at least through 1918.

His wife, Bertha Algier Hebbel, predeceased him by five years.

His obituary appeared in the Baltimore SUN on 24 Nov 1905:


Mr. Julius Hebbel, the well known photographer, died at his home, 321 North Gay street, shortly before midnight THursday after a long illness. Mr. Hebbel was born in Germany and was 52 years old.

His parents came to this country and located in Baltimore when he was 5 years old. He was educated in the schools of the city, and when quite young began the study of photography. For 28 years he conducted studios on North Gay streeet, owning two at the time of his death.

Mr. Hebbel married Miss Bertha Algiers [sic], who died five years ago. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Hebbel, who is 87 years old, and two young sons, Masters Julius and Amiel Hebbel. He also leaves two aunts--sisters of his mother--Mrs. Frances Gardener and Mrs. Frank Boyd, both of whom are more than 80 years of age.

NOTE: Hebbel's death certificate gives his year of birth as 1853, while the headstone says 1854.
