John S. Belford was born in Pennsylvania. Nothing is known about his birth family. Farming was his occupation. He met and married Ann S. Hilton (marriage date is unknown).
Their first son, James, was born 1844 in Morgan Co., Ohio. They also lived in in Vinton Co., for a time, then moved to Wisconsin for several years - presumably in LaCrosse Co. By 1860 the family lived in Fulton Co., Illinois.
Their first-born son, James Belford, had enlisted in the army during the Civil War and he fought in the Battle of Chickamauga, October 1863, which resulted in his death.
1870 the family lived in Eldorado Twp. of McDonough Co., Illinois.
In the early 1870's John and Ann took the family remaining at home and relocated in Kaufman Co., Texas. Two of their married daughters, Mary (Parkinson) and Rebecca (Miller), and their husbands and families also went with them to Kaufman Co. They purchased land and began farming.
John S. Belford died in Kaufman Co., and is buried there in the Lawrence Cemetery. Ann survived him and remained in Kaufman County; she passed away in October 1876.
