Civil War Confederate Army Officer. Came to Texas from North Carolina in 1845, and fought in Mexican War and Indian campaigns. In the Civil War, he commanded Confederate cavalry regiment in Texas outposts from Red River to Fort McKavett. He led patrols that protected outer settlements and prevented Indian attacks and threatened Federal invasion from Indian territory. Elected to Texas Legislature in 1883.

When James Buckner (Col.) Barry was born on December 16, 1821, in Onslow, North Carolina, his father, Bryant, was 46 and his mother, Mary Murrill, was 42. He married Sarah Annapolis Matticks and they had seven children together. He then married Martha Ann Peveler and they had five children together. He died on December 16, 1906, in Walnut Springs, Texas, having lived a long life of 85 years, and was buried in Barry, Texas.
