Meshack Teter is the son of Reuben Teter and Christena H. (Phares) Teter. He left his birthplace in West Virginia and moved to Illinois where he married Sarah Owens on October 9, 1844, in St. Clair County. The couple had at least six children: Oliver N., George L., Melissa Amelia, Louis Franklin, William Augusta, and Simeon. Sarah died before October 1857. Meshack moved his family to Scotland County, Missouri, where, he married Sarah Sedam, daughter of Henry N. and Lucy A. (Sutton) Sedam, on October 1, 1857. They settled in the eastern part of the county and raised a family of at least eight children: Martha Ann, Mary Louise, Christena Isabella, John Columbus, Luella, Noah Lee, Nettie, Virginia, Alpha, and Bertha Jane.
