She is a testimony of faith and love. Her 60-year marriage to her loving husband, Robert H. Burgess, emulated her devotion. Her love and interest in her children, Bruce Burgess of Middlebury, Vt., and Janet Hoffman of Newport News, is reflected in their personal and professional lives.
Adele Burgess, a native of Baltimore, Md., was a Peninsula resident for 57 years. A graduate of Towson Normal School, she was a teacher at St. Andrew's Episcopal School from 1953 to 1973, when she retired to accompany her husband on his cruise line lecture series. Many of her former students are prominent professionals in the area.
She was a faithful member of Hilton First United Methodist Church since 1941 and a member of UMW Church Circle No. 4. Adele volunteered for Riverside Regional Medical Center for 34 years.
Her grandchildren include Melissa Burgess of Richmond, Mary Burgess of Lynchburg, Kimber-Leigh Jachles of Florida, Matthew Hoffman of Staunton and Mark and Emily Hoffman of Newport News.
