Oct. 7, 1922 - Dec. 21, 2000
Roscoe Lewis "Mac" McDaniel, 78, of Carthage, died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2000, at Northwoods Lodge in Silverdale, Wash., near the homes of his daughters, Beth and Barb.  He was born Oct. 7, 1922, the son of Ernest E. and Mary L. (Hyde) McDaniel, at the family farm in Brock township, near Memphis, Mo.  He married Margaret Jane Symmonds on Nov. 28, 1943, at the First Methodist Church in Carthage.  She died Nov. 9, 1990. He is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Larry (Jane Ann) Boston of Livermore, Calif.; Kathryn Louise McDaniel of Oakland, Calif.; Mrs. Walter B. (Barbara Lynne) Chapman of Sooke, British Columbia, Canada; and Mrs. Timothy (Mary Elizabeth "Beth") Cockrel of Bremerton, Wash.; seven grandchildren, Christina Jane Boston, Mark William (Vanessa) Boston, Matthew Hamilton (Luma) Dahlbacka, Emily Ann Everitt, Matthew McDaniel "Mac" Everitt, Ryan Paul Cockrel, and Benjamin Scott Cockrel; three great-grandchildren, Danielle Hallie Dahlbacka, Jason Hamilton Dahlbacka, and Julia Marie Boston; and several beloved nieces and nephews, including Michael Thornburg of Memphis, Mo.  He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one sister, Marie Thornburg; and a daughter, Nancy Ellen Everitt. He served as Hancock County Clerk and Recorder from 1966 to 1990, following positions with Sears Roebuck and Twaddle Furniture Company in Carthage.  He served in the US Navy in World War II in the Pacific Theater (Saipan), and was a member of the American Legion and VFW posts in Carthage.  He had been on the Carthage Community School District #338 board, including one term as president.  An active member of the first United Methodist Church of Carthage, he fulfilled many volunteer roles over the years.  He was a member of the United Methodist Men and the Illinois Association of County Clerks and Recorders, as well as the Masons. First and foremost, Mac had a deep love of family and family life.  He was always proud of the talents and accomplishments of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  He was proud to have served in public office for 24 years.  He loved the beauty of nature and being outside as much as possible -- golfing, fishing, camping, cookouts, driving/touring, gardening. A small memorial service was held in Washington, and a service is scheduled in Carthage on Feb. 10, at the First United Methodist Church.  The public is welcome, and details will be announced later.  The body has been cremated.  Burial will be in Moss Ridge Cemetery in Carthage in a private family service. Memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Carthage.
