Motion Picture Cinematographer, Director. The son of a noted photographer, he served in the Pacific Theater while with the United States Navy during World War II. Upon returning home, he enrolled at the University of Southern California School of Cinema on the GI Bill, and later began his career in the entertainment industry as a still photographer. He worked as a camera operator for the TV series "The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet", and advanced to cinematographer on the films "Games" (1967) and "The President's Analyst" (1967). In a short period Fraker established himself as a reputable figure in his field, and joined an elite group of Hollywood trend-setters of that era which included Laszlo Kovacs and Nestor Almendros. As director of photography he shot such pictures as "Rosemary's Baby" (1968) and "Bullitt" (1968), capturing the latter film's classic car chase scene. While working on the set of the film "Paint Your Wagon" (1969), he became friends with Lee Marvin which led to his first directing effort on the picture "Monte Walsh" (1970). He followed this with "A Reflection of Fear" (1973) and "The Legend of the Lone Ranger" (1981). During the course of his career Fraker scored six Oscar nominations, for "Looking for Mr. Goodbar" (1977), "Heaven Can Wait" (1978), "1941" (2 nominations, 1979), "War Games" (1983) and "Murphy's Romance" (1985). He died from cancer at age 86. (bio by: C.S.)
