Douglas Coke, 72, of Sonora died Monday at Tuolumne General Hospital.

A native of Covelo, he was an optometrist for 40 years and a graduate of the Southern California School of Optometry. He was the past president of the Sonora Jaycees and Sonora Rotary. He was an elder of the Church of the Redeemer, Sonora, and a member of Covelo Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star of Cerrito, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, E Clampus Vitus (GDR for Matuca in 1967), Tuolumne County Chamber of Commerce, Royal Society of Health, San Joaquin Optometric Society, California Optometric Association, American Optometric Association and Tuolumne General Hospital Foundation. He was a former Tuolumne County planning commissioner. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and was a member of the 73rd Bomber Wing Association.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Coke of Sonora; children, Douglas Coke and Linda Kuffler, both of Sonora; brother, Col. Paul E. Coke of Phoenix; and seven grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Sierra Bible Church. Private inurnment will be at Mountain Shadow Cemetery. Terzich & Wilson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
