Mrs. Anna Mariah Roper, age 77, one of the most highly esteemed women of Hobart, died at her home at 10:15 Sunday morning. Death followed a stroke of apoplexy which Mrs. Roper suffered at three o'clock Friday afternoon. She was the widow of Phillip Roper.
Born in Burlington, Mich., October 3, 1851, Mrs. Roper was Miss Anna Mariah Guyer, one of ten children of Andrew and Mary Royce Guyer. The mother died when the daughter Anna, was but eleven years of age. In 1872 Anna Guyer came to Hobart and taught at the Shearer School near this city. On November 23, 1873, she was married to Phillip B. Roper.
Five sons were born to Mr. and Mrs. Roper, the first, Louis, having died at the age of six months. The sons who survive are Ernest G. Roper of Gary, Robert B., Luther D., and Phillip E. Roper all of Hobart. Mrs. Roper is also survived by one brother, Elijah H. Guyer of Hobart; an adopted daughter, Miss Maria Roper of Hobart; and five grandchildren, Ernest, Jr. son of Ernest G. Roper; Isabel and Janet Roper, daughters of Luther D. Roper and James and Phillip, sons of Phillip E. Roper.
During her married life until six years ago Mrs. Roper lived on the old Roper homestead near Hobart where her husband died in 1918. Mrs. Roper moved to Hobart in 1928. She was a member of the First M.E. Church and had been active in the affairs of the Ladies' Aid Society and Bible Class. She was a woman of many good qualities and was loved by all that knew her, She frequently ministered to those in need and was known for her knowledge and skill in caring for the sick. Mrs. Roper was especially fond of children and loved to have them in her home.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the home with the Rev. G. F. Craig, pastor of the First M.E. Church officiating. Burial was in the Hobart cemetery in charge of Alwin Wild. Among the relatives who were here for the funeral were William Sloan of Three Rivers, Mich., Mr. and Mrs. Evan Roper of Michigan City, Mrs. Gladys Parker and Mr. and Mrs. Ray Henderson of Warsaw, Samuel Henderson, Louis Henderson and Miss Etta Henderson of Gary.
