Gene P. Thompson, 67, of Dubuque, died Thursday, May 17, 2007, at home.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery.

He was born on Feb. 16, 1940, in Dubuque, son of Lyman Earl and Freida Mae (Mauer) Thompson. He married Karen A. Trizulny on July 23, 1960, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church.

He graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1958.

Gene worked as a lithograph printer for Flexsteel Industries in Dubuque for 35 years and earned a National 3M Printer Award. He was a member of the United Steel Worker's Union. He retired from Flexsteel in 2002 and was able to devote more time to what he loved most, his family, his friends and his hobbies.

He was a member of the Tri-State Men's Garden Club and was one of the founders, a lifetime member, and current vice president of the Dubuque Arboretum and Botanical Gardens. He also served on the Dubuque Park Commission.

He loved the outdoors, gardening and working on "his" Japanese waterfall at the Arboretum. Gene found much enjoyment combining his love of the garden with his model railroading and would spend many hours "playing trains" with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed camping, chocolate ice cream, and his dogs, of which there were several over the years. His greatest joy was his family and the time he spent with them.

Gene was a gentle man who will be greatly missed.

Surviving are his wife, Karen Ann Thompson, of Dubuque; his children, Julie Ann (Loras) Lahr, of Dyersville, Iowa, James T. (Jill) Thompson and Terrance M. (Donna) Thompson, both of Dubuque, and GlenNiece M. (Jon) Kutsch, of Victoria, Minn.; his sister, BettyMae Thompson, of Dubuque; 18 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Michael Joseph Thompson.
